Chapter 8 - THE TRAP
The surgery was moved to a private surgical center under heavy security.
Lily thought it was exciting.
She wore a hospital bracelet and complained about the terrible pudding.
I laughed despite everything.
Then Dominic entered the room.
“We have a problem.”
My heart dropped.
“What?”
“The surgeon's assistant disappeared.”
My stomach clenched.
“Is the surgery canceled?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
Dominic handed me a file.
The surgeon had received an anonymous payment.
I stared at the amount.
“He was bought.”
“We don't know whether he intends to harm her.”
I looked at my daughter.
“No.”
Dominic's voice hardened.
“We're replacing the entire surgical team.”
Hours later, the authorities arrested the assistant in the parking garage.
He confessed.
The company had promised him money to alter Lily's medical records and delay the operation until they could take her into a private research program.
I felt sick.
“They were going to steal my daughter.”
Dominic shook his head.
“They wanted access.”
“For the same reason?”
“Yes.”
Lily looked up.
“Mommy?”
I forced a smile.
“Everything is okay.”
Dominic watched her.
