Chapter 17 - THE HOSPITAL ATTACK

It happened at six in the morning.
A fire alarm erupted inside Lily's new therapy center.
Patients were evacuated.
Doctors ran through the halls.
I grabbed Lily's wheelchair.
“Stay with me.”
Dominic appeared instantly.
“Back exit.”
We moved quickly.
Smoke filled the corridor.
Lily coughed.
Then we heard footsteps behind us.
A man shouted my name.
Dominic turned.
“Keep going.”
I pushed Lily toward the exit.
A shadow rushed from the smoke.
Dominic tackled him.
They hit the floor.
The man escaped through another doorway.
Police arrived minutes later.
The building had been sabotaged.
No one was seriously injured.
But inside the therapy room, they found something terrifying.
A small camera.
Pointed directly at Lily's equipment.
Dominic stared at it.
“They weren't trying to hurt her.”
“Then what?”
“They wanted to know how well the surgery worked.”
My stomach turned.
“Why?”
He looked at me.
“Because they're still studying her.”
I understood.
They didn't want to destroy Lily.
They wanted to control what happened to her body.
The thought was worse.
My daughter wasn't a person to them.

She was data.
And that was something I could never forgive.
