Chapter 4 - THE SURGERY

The hospital placed Lily on immediate security precautions.
Her doctor met us in a private consultation room.
“We've had an unauthorized attempt to alter her records.”
I felt sick.
“Why would anyone do that?”
He looked at Dominic.
“That's what we're trying to determine.”
Dominic remained silent.
The doctor continued.
“Her surgery is scheduled for Friday morning. We can move it earlier.”
“How soon?”
“Tomorrow.”
I looked at Lily.
She was coloring quietly.
Tomorrow.
The word terrified me.
It also felt like a lifeline.
“Do it.”
The doctor nodded.
After he left, Dominic looked at me.
“Your daughter needs the procedure.”
“Yes.”
“But we need to know why someone wants access to it.”
I frowned.
“What does the surgery have to do with them?”
Dominic handed me a photograph.
It showed Lily leaving a clinic three months earlier.
Someone had taken it from across the street.
My hands shook.
“She was photographed?”
“Yes.”
Another picture showed her at physical therapy.
Another showed me entering our apartment.
My stomach turned.
“This isn't random.”
“No.”
“Then what do they want?”
May you like
Dominic looked at Lily.
“I think your daughter is part of something someone doesn't want discovered.”
