Chapter 25 - THE FIRST DANCE

At the wedding reception, Lily insisted on joining the dance floor.
“I can dance.”
I laughed.
“You're in a wheelchair.”
“So?”
She looked at me like I had asked the stupidest question imaginable.
Dominic offered his hand.
“May I?”
Lily smiled.
“Yes.”
He helped position her wheelchair.
Then he danced beside her.
No pity.
No embarrassment.
Just joy.
People watched.
Some looked uncomfortable.
Lily didn't care.
She laughed so loudly that even the musicians smiled.
I stood beside the dance floor crying.
Dominic looked over.
“Are you okay?”
I nodded.
“I'm just happy.”
Lily raised both arms.
“Mommy, stop crying!”
Everyone laughed.
Then she looked at Dominic.
“Again.”
He smiled.
“Again.”
The dance continued.
And I realized something.
The little girl who had once begged strangers for money on a city street was now surrounded by people applauding her joy.
May you like
Nobody was staring at what she couldn't do.
They were celebrating everything she could.
