Chapter 27 - THE LETTER TO DOMINIC

On Lily's tenth birthday, she wrote Dominic a letter.

She insisted he read it alone.

He opened it in his study.

Dear Mr. Dominic,

You were a stranger when you met me.

I was scared of you.

Then you helped me.

You didn't carry me.

You didn't tell me what to do.

You just asked me what I needed.

I remember that.

You helped Mommy too.

You helped us fight.

You made bad people stop.

But I think the best thing you did was let me decide things for myself.

I used to think being in a wheelchair meant I couldn't do anything.

Now I know it only means I do some things differently.

Thank you for believing me.

Dominic sat in silence after finishing the letter.

When he came downstairs, his eyes were red.

Lily looked at him.

“Did you cry?”

“No.”

“You did.”

He laughed.

“Maybe.”

She smiled.

“Good.”

Then she hugged him.

May you like

For a man who had built an empire by controlling everything, the greatest gift in his life had become the one thing money could never purchase.

A child's trust.
