Chapter 6 - THE MAN INSIDE THE HOSPITAL

The hospital investigation identified one employee accessing Lily's records repeatedly.
A scheduling coordinator.
She disappeared before security could question her.
Her locker was empty.
Her apartment had been abandoned.
Dominic's investigator found one clue.
A handwritten note.
MOVE THE SURGERY.
I stared at it.
“Why?”
Dominic shook his head.
“We don't know.”
Then Lily remembered something.
“Mommy.”
“What?”
“The lady asked me about Daddy.”
My heart stopped.
“Your father?”
Lily nodded.
“She said he knew things about my spine.”
I looked at Dominic.
He turned cold.
“What did your father do?”
I swallowed.
“My husband died when Lily was two.”
“Did he work in medicine?”
“No.”
“Research?”
“No.”
“Then why would someone connect him to this?”
I remembered something.
A box my husband had told me never to open.
Documents from before Lily's diagnosis.
After years of ignoring it, I finally understood why he had been so secretive.
Dominic looked at me.
“Where is the box?”
“At home.”
“Then we're going there.”
When we arrived, the apartment door was unlocked.
My blood turned cold.
Someone had already been inside.
The box was gone.
But the intruder had left one thing behind.
A photograph of my husband holding Lily as an infant.
