Chapter 23 - DOMINIC'S FAMILY

I finally asked Dominic about his own family.
We were sitting outside Lily's therapy center.
“You never talk about them.”
He was quiet.
“My father died when I was twenty.”
“And your mother?”
“She left years before.”
“Why?”
“She couldn't live with what the family had become.”
I looked at him.
“Your sister?”
His jaw tightened.
“That's the story I told you.”
“You said she died.”
“She did.”
“Then why do you still look angry when you talk about her?”
He stared across the street.
“Because she didn't have to.”
I didn't understand.
He continued.
“My father refused to pay for a treatment that could have saved her because he didn't want to admit the company had made a mistake.”
My chest tightened.
“She died because of their decision?”
“Yes.”
That explained everything.
The rage.
The money.
The obsession with protecting Lily.
Dominic had spent his entire life trying to prevent another child from becoming a number on someone's ledger.
I reached for his hand.
“You saved her in your own way.”
He looked at me.
“I know.”

Then he smiled faintly.
“That's why I couldn't walk away from Lily.”
