Chapter 7 - WHAT MY HUSBAND HID

I spent that night searching every drawer for anything my husband might have left behind.
Dominic stayed nearby.
Finally, I remembered an old storage key sewn inside a coat.
The storage unit contained a small metal case.
Inside was a medical report dated before Lily's birth.
I read the first page.
Then stopped.
My husband had worked briefly for the same pharmaceutical company investigating Lily.
He hadn't been a scientist.
He had been a legal consultant.
Dominic read the report.
“This is why they know your daughter.”
I looked at him.
“What did my husband do?”
“He discovered the company had been collecting data from families without proper consent.”
My hands shook.
“He tried to expose them?”
“Yes.”
I stared at the documents.
“Then why didn't he tell me?”
“He may have been protecting you.”
A second file contained names.
Payments.
Internal communications.
And one disturbing line:
LILY CARTER — SUBJECT FAMILY.
My stomach turned.
“She was listed before she was even born.”
Dominic closed the file.
“This goes beyond surgery.”
“What do we do?”
He looked at Lily asleep on the couch.
“Get her through the operation.”
“And after?”
“Then we expose everyone involved.”
I looked at him.
“You said you would protect her.”
May you like
“I will.”
This time, there was no uncertainty in his voice.
