Chapter 26 - THE HOUSE ON FIFTH AVENUE

Dominic bought a new home.

Not for himself.

For us.

I refused at first.

“We don't need this.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because Lily deserves a place designed around her.”

The house had wide doors.

Accessible bathrooms.

A therapy room.

A garden path without stairs.

A bedroom she could reach without assistance.

Lily explored everything.

“This is my room?”

“Yes.”

She rolled toward the window.

“It's huge.”

Dominic smiled.

“Too huge?”

“No.”

She looked at me.

“It's perfect.”

I finally understood what he had done.

He hadn't bought us luxury.

He had bought Lily independence.

That mattered more.

She could reach the kitchen.

Open the garden door.

Move through the house without waiting for someone to lift her.

The first evening, she told me something that broke my heart.

“I like not having to ask.”

I sat beside her.

“Ask for what?”

“To move.”

I hugged her.

“You shouldn't have had to.”

May you like

She smiled.

“Now I don't.”
