Chapter 3 - THE WARNING
Dominic didn't raise his voice.
He didn't need to.
The three men stopped when they saw him.
“You're following a child,” he said.
One man laughed nervously.
“We're not interested in your business.”
“You're standing beside my vehicle.”
“She isn't your family.”
Dominic took one step forward.
“She is under my protection now.”
The man's smile disappeared.
I watched through the windshield.
Then one of them lifted his phone.
Dominic noticed.
“Put it away.”
The man obeyed.
That frightened me more than a threat would have.
They knew him.
Finally, the men left.
Dominic returned to the SUV.
I stared at him.
“What did they want?”
“They wanted access to Lily's hospital file.”
“Why?”
“I don't know yet.”
Lily spoke from the back seat.
“They asked me about my surgery.”
Dominic turned around.
“What did they ask?”
“Where it was happening.”
My blood went cold.
I looked at Dominic.
“They're planning something.”
“Yes.”
“What?”
He didn't answer.
Not because he didn't know.
Because he didn't want to frighten me before he had proof.
Then my phone rang.
The hospital.
A nurse said someone had tried to change Lily's surgery date.
I stared into the darkness.

Someone wasn't merely watching my daughter.
They were getting inside her medical life.
