Chapter 21 - THE NEW BEGINNING
Lily's progress became the center of our lives.
Every morning began with therapy.
Every afternoon included exercises.
Every night ended with a story.
Some days, she stood.
Some days, she couldn't.
She hated the bad days.
“I was better yesterday.”
“I know.”
“Why can't I do it today?”
“Because healing isn't a straight line.”
Dominic sat nearby.
“You don't have to win every day.”
Lily looked at him.
“Then what's the point?”
“Showing up.”
She thought about that.
Then she tried again.
One morning, she crossed three steps between parallel bars.
Three.
I covered my mouth.
Dominic didn't say anything.
He simply watched.
Lily reached the other side and looked back.
“I did it.”
I nodded through tears.
“Yes.”
She smiled.
It wasn't a miracle.
It was harder than that.
It was work.
Pain.
Patience.
