Chapter 24 - THE WEDDING INVITATION

A year later, Dominic received an invitation.
It was from his younger cousin.
A family wedding.
He planned to ignore it.
Lily disagreed.
“You should go.”
He looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because you're family too.”
He laughed.
“You have an interesting definition of family.”
She shrugged.
“Family means people who show up.”
I looked at Dominic.
She wasn't wrong.
So we went.
The Moretti estate was enormous.
Security surrounded the grounds.
Black cars lined the driveway.
People stared when Dominic arrived with us.
Some looked surprised.
Others looked afraid.
Lily rolled her wheelchair beside me.
Then a little boy approached.
“Can I race you?”
Lily smiled.
“Only if I get a head start.”
He laughed.
Soon several children were playing around the garden.
Dominic stood nearby watching them.
I saw something change in his face.
For years, his family had represented power.
Money.
Pain.
Now he was seeing something different.
Children laughing without fear.
He looked at Lily.
“She's changed my life.”
May you like
I smiled.
“She changed mine too.”
