Chapter 8 - THE ATTACK

Men stormed the hallway.
Lorenzo grabbed Lena.
I followed.
Bullets struck the walls.
Security guards returned fire.
We ran through the ballroom.
The chandelier shattered above us.
Lena screamed.
I covered her head.
Lorenzo pulled us toward the chapel.
“The key!”
I understood.
I handed him the bronze key.
He opened the hidden door beneath the altar.
We descended.
Behind us, footsteps thundered through the chapel.
Matteo's men had found us.
The underground passage ended at an old vault.
Inside were boxes filled with documents.
Lorenzo opened one.
Photographs.
Letters.
Birth records.
Then he found Lena's name.
His expression changed.
I looked over his shoulder.
There it was.
Lena Hale.
Father: Gabriel Hale.
But beneath that was another document.
A handwritten note.
If anything happens to me, protect my daughter.
The signature belonged to Gabriel.
Lorenzo looked at me.
“He trusted my father.”
“What happened to him?”
“Matteo killed him.”
Suddenly, Lena pointed toward the back wall.
“Mommy.”
“What?”
“There.”
A second bronze lock was hidden behind the shelf.
Lorenzo opened it.
A recording device waited inside.
Gabriel's voice filled the vault.
“The ledger is not money.”
“It is proof.”
“Whoever controls it can destroy the entire organization.”

Then he said the sentence that froze everyone.
“Lena is the key.”
