Chapter 24 - THE OLD PHOTOGRAPH

One rainy afternoon, Lena found an old photograph in storage.
It showed me kneeling on the floor of Valentina's sitting room.
My hair was soaked.
My apron was stained.
Lorenzo stood in the doorway.
Lena stared at it.
“That's the day everything changed.”
“Yes.”
“Were you scared?”
“Terrified.”
“Why?”
“Because I didn't know if your father would believe me.”
She looked at Lorenzo.
“Did you?”
He smiled.
“Eventually.”
She laughed.
“That's not what Mommy says.”
I looked at him.
He raised his hands.
“She's right.”
Lena studied the photograph again.
“You saved me.”
I shook my head.
“You saved yourself by running to your father.”
She thought about that.
“Then Daddy saved me too.”
Lorenzo crouched beside her.
“We saved each other.”
Lena smiled.
She put the photograph back carefully.
Then she took our hands.
“Let's go home.”
We followed her.
