Chapter 14 - THE FINAL ATTEMPT
Matteo's arrest should have ended everything.
It didn't.
Three nights later, the estate security alarms activated.
Someone had bypassed the outer cameras.
Then the power failed.
Lena was asleep upstairs.
I ran toward her room.
Lorenzo was already there.
A masked man appeared at the end of the corridor.
He fired.
Lorenzo pushed us behind a wall.
Security returned fire.
The attacker fled through the garden.
Lorenzo chased him.
I stayed with Lena.
She woke crying.
“Mommy?”
“I'm here.”
“Is Daddy okay?”
“Yes.”
Minutes later, Lorenzo returned.
He was bleeding from his arm.
“Are you hurt?”
“Just a graze.”
He looked at Lena.
“She's safe?”
“Yes.”
He crouched beside her bed.
Lena touched his sleeve.
“Did the bad man come back?”
“Yes.”
“Did you make him go away?”
Lorenzo smiled.
“For tonight.”
Then he looked at me.
“We can't stay here.”
I nodded.
The mansion had become a target.
By dawn, we were leaving.
