Chapter 23 - THE FOUNDATION

The new foundation opened its doors to children from struggling families.
I became its director.
Lorenzo funded it anonymously.
We never used the Moretti name on the building.
Lena designed the logo herself.
A bronze key surrounded by a small circle.
When the first children arrived, she handed each one a welcome card.
“You belong here.”
One little boy stared at her.
“Do you own this place?”
Lena laughed.
“No.”
She looked toward me.
“My mom does.”
I smiled.
That afternoon, Lorenzo arrived unexpectedly.
He stood in the doorway watching Lena talk to the children.
One of the staff members whispered:
“He looks proud.”
“He is.”
Lorenzo came toward us.
“She gets that from you.”
I smiled.
“No.”
“She gets it from herself.”
He took my hand.
“You're right.”
