Valentina finally confessed.
Lena was not only connected to Lorenzo.
Her father was someone Matteo had been searching for.
A man named Gabriel Hale.
A former partner of Lorenzo's father.
Gabriel had disappeared twelve years earlier after stealing evidence from the organization.
“He had a daughter,” Valentina said.
I stared at her.
“You're saying Lena is his?”
Valentina nodded.
Lena looked confused.
“Mommy?”
I pulled her closer.
“Don't listen.”
Lorenzo stepped toward Valentina.
“Why does Matteo want her?”
“Because Gabriel left behind something.”
“What?”
“The location of the original Moretti ledger.”
Lorenzo's face changed.
The ledger contained names, accounts, and evidence that could destroy several powerful families.
“Where is it?”
Valentina shook her head.
“Lena doesn't know.”
“Then why is Matteo after her?”
“Because Gabriel hid the answer inside her childhood records.”
I looked at Lena.
Her school files.
Medical records.
Birth certificate.
Everything suddenly became dangerous.
Lorenzo turned toward me.
“We're moving her.”
“Where?”
“Somewhere no one can find.”
Before we could leave, a security alarm sounded.
