Chapter 20 - THE DOOR STAYS OPEN

Years later, Lena asked to see the old chapel.
She was sixteen.
Older.
Taller.
Still curious.
We stood before the bronze door.
She touched the key.
“This is where everything started.”
“Yes.”
“Were you scared?”
I smiled.
“Very.”
Lorenzo stood beside us.
“I was too.”
Lena looked at him.
“You're scared of anything?”
He laughed.
“Apparently.”
She opened the door.
The vault was empty now.
No hidden ledgers.
No weapons.
No secret accounts.
Only one framed photograph.
The three of us beside the lake.
Lena smiled.
“I like this better.”
“So do I.”
She looked at us.
“Why did you trust Mommy?”
Lorenzo answered without hesitation.
“Because when everyone else thought about themselves, she thought about you.”
Lena looked at me.
I smiled.
“She was worth protecting.”
Lorenzo took my hand.
“No.”
He looked at Lena.
“She taught me who was worth protecting.”
We walked out together.
I turned back once.
The bronze door remained open.
Years earlier, a small key had opened that door and nearly destroyed an entire family.
Now it remained open because there was nothing left to hide.
No secrets.
No threats.
No locked children.
No frightened women.
May you like
Only a family that had survived the people who tried to destroy it.
And a little girl who had run into her father's arms on a rainy evening and changed all our lives forever.
