Chapter 12 - VALENTINA'S CONFESSION

Valentina was questioned for hours.
Eventually, she broke.
She admitted she had known about the ledger.
She had helped Matteo because he promised to protect her family.
“But you targeted Lena,” Lorenzo said.
Valentina lowered her head.
“I was afraid.”
“You locked her mother in a room.”
“I know.”
“You threatened a child.”
“I know.”
Lorenzo's voice hardened.
“And you were going to marry me while planning to steal everything I owned.”
Valentina cried.
“I thought I had no choice.”
He looked at her.
“You always had a choice.”
She signed a statement implicating Matteo, Richard, and several other associates.
When agents escorted her away, she stopped near me.
“I was wrong about you.”
I didn't answer.
“You were never insignificant.”
I looked at Lena.
“I never cared what you thought.”
Valentina nodded.
“That was your strength.”
Then she left.
Lorenzo watched the door close.
“Do you forgive her?”
“No.”
He nodded.
“Neither do I.”
But there was no anger in his voice anymore.
