Chapter 28 - THE CHILDREN'S DAY
Years passed.
The foundation expanded.
Lena became its youngest board member.
She opened a program for children of single parents.
At the first annual event, she stood on stage.
She spoke about growing up without understanding why adults were always afraid.
Then she smiled.
“Someone once told me a child is a complication.”
The audience went silent.
“I don't believe that anymore.”
She looked toward me.
“A child can be the reason a family chooses to become better.”
I cried.
Lorenzo squeezed my hand.
The applause lasted for almost a minute.
Afterward, Lena came to us.
“Did I do okay?”
I hugged her.
“You were perfect.”
Lorenzo kissed her forehead.
“You made your mother cry.”
She laughed.
“That's easy.”
I rolled my eyes.
“Very funny.”
She smiled.
Then she looked at both of us.
“Thank you.”
“For what?” Lorenzo asked.
“For giving me a life that wasn't decided by our family's past.”
