Chapter 17 - THE WEDDING RINGS

Months later, Lorenzo returned from New York with a small velvet box.
Lena noticed immediately.
“What is that?”
“Nothing.”
She frowned.
“It's a ring.”
Lorenzo laughed.
“Yes.”
“For Mommy?”
He looked at me.
“Yes.”
Lena screamed.
“I knew it!”
I covered my face.
“Lena.”
She jumped onto the sofa.
“Daddy is marrying Mommy!”
Lorenzo knelt in front of me.
“I don't have the perfect words.”
“You don't need them.”
“I've spent my life believing love was weakness.”
I looked into his eyes.
“And now?”
“Now I know it is the reason I survived.”
He opened the box.
“I want you and Lena beside me for the rest of my life.”
He took my hand.
“Will you marry me?”
My eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
Lena threw herself around both of us.
The rain began tapping against the windows.
