The DNA report arrived two days later.
It confirmed what Gabriel's records already proved.
Lena was his biological daughter.
But there was something else.
The report showed a distant genetic connection to Lorenzo's family.
Lorenzo stared at the document.
“What does this mean?”
The investigator explained.
Gabriel's mother had been Lorenzo's father's sister.
That meant Lena belonged to both families.
Moretti by blood.
Hale by blood.
The child Matteo had feared had ties to both sides of the empire.
Lena looked at me.
“Mommy?”
I smiled.
“Nothing changes.”
“I'm still me?”
“Yes.”
She smiled.
Lorenzo crouched beside her.
“You don't have to become anything because of your family.”
She looked at him.
“What if I want to be a doctor?”
“Then be a doctor.”
“A teacher?”
“Then be a teacher.”
“A princess?”
Lorenzo smiled.
“Especially then.”
Lena laughed.
I watched them.
For years, people had treated bloodlines like weapons.
Lorenzo was teaching her that blood was not a destiny.
