Chapter 25 - THE LAST LETTER

Five years later, another letter arrived.

It was from Valentina.

She had completed her sentence and was living quietly in another state.

The letter contained only one page.

I was wrong about what power meant.

I thought money could make people stay.

I thought fear could make people obey.

I was wrong.

Sophia, you were never weak.

You simply valued something I had forgotten how to recognize.

A family.

I read the letter twice.

Then gave it to Lorenzo.

He read it silently.

“Do you forgive her?”

I thought for a moment.

“No.”

He nodded.

“Me neither.”

“But I don't hate her.”

He looked at me.

“That's enough.”

We folded the letter.

Not as forgiveness.

As closure.

Then we put it away.

Some people deserved a second chance.

May you like

Others deserved distance.

Both could be true.
