Chapter 29 - THE BRONZE KEY

On Lena's twenty-fifth birthday, I gave her the bronze chapel key.
She stared at it.
“You kept this?”
“For all these years.”
“Why are you giving it to me?”
“Because you should know where your story began.”
Lorenzo stood beside me.
“The key once opened a vault full of secrets.”
Lena turned it over in her palm.
“And now?”
“Now it opens nothing.”
She laughed.
“Then why keep it?”
I smiled.
“Because it reminds us that doors can hide terrible things.”
Lorenzo added:
“And opening them can save lives.”
Lena closed her fingers around the key.
“I'll keep it.”
She hugged us.
We stood together beneath the evening sky.
The same family.
