Chapter 8 - THE BOARDROOM WAR

Marcus called an emergency board meeting.
Daniel Voss arrived smiling.
“You seem upset.”
Marcus placed the recovered evidence on the table.
“Olivia Carter.”
Voss's smile disappeared.
“Maya Carter.”
Silence.
“Your name was mentioned by the man who abducted her.”
“That is ridiculous.”
Marcus played the recorded phone call.
Voss listened without moving.
Then he shook his head.
“Anyone can say my name.”
Marcus leaned forward.
“Then explain the deleted insurance file.”
“I don't know anything about it.”
“And the payment?”
Voss froze.
Marcus slid another document across the table.
A transfer from a shell company controlled by Voss.
The room erupted.
“You've been taking money from a claims administrator.”
Voss stood.
“This is a setup.”
“No.”
Marcus's voice dropped.
“This is the reason a sick employee and her daughter were living in a motel.”
Voss backed toward the door.
“You don't understand.”
“I understand enough.”
Voss suddenly smiled.
“You think you're in control?”
Marcus watched him.
“What does that mean?”
Voss looked around the room.
“You've been signing papers without reading them for years.”
Then he left.

Marcus stared at the closed door.
For the first time, he wondered how much of his company wasn't really his anymore.
