Chapter 5 - DANIEL VOSS

Marcus knew the name immediately.

Daniel Voss was the executive vice president overseeing employee benefits.

He had worked with Marcus for eight years.

Reliable.

Polished.

Untouchable.

Marcus called him that evening.

“Did you process Olivia Carter's claim?”

Voss sounded surprised.

“I handle thousands of cases.”

“Her name.”

A pause.

“Yes.”

“Why was it denied?”

“Missing documentation.”

“She submitted everything.”

“That's not what our system shows.”

Marcus looked through the glass wall of his office.

“Send me the entire file.”

“Of course.”

The call ended.

Five minutes later, Marcus's assistant entered.

“Sir, you have a problem.”

“What?”

“The file was deleted from the server.”

Marcus stood.

“Deleted?”

“Completely.”

His assistant lowered his voice.

“Someone accessed it thirty minutes ago.”

Marcus felt the pieces beginning to connect.

Olivia's claim.

The hospital.

The eviction.

The mysterious warning.

And now a missing corporate file.

He drove back to the motel.

When he arrived, the door was slightly open.

His heart stopped.

“Maya?”

No answer.

He pushed the door wider.

Olivia was on the floor beside the bed.

Blood marked her sleeve.

Marcus rushed forward.

“Olivia!”

She struggled to speak.

“They came for the papers.”

Marcus looked toward the bathroom.

“Maya?”

May you like

Olivia's eyes widened.

“She took Maya.”
