Maya eventually became an attorney specializing in medical and housing rights.
At her first major case, she represented a family whose medical bills had nearly cost them their home.

Outside the courthouse, reporters asked why she chose that field.
Maya looked directly into the cameras.
“Because when I was six, my family nearly disappeared.”
She paused.
“One person noticed.”
The reporter asked who.
“My father.”
“Your biological father?”

“No.”
She glanced toward Marcus waiting across the street.
“My real father.”
Marcus's eyes filled with tears.
