Chapter 27 - THE QUESTION

One evening, Maya asked Marcus something unexpected.

“Do you ever regret helping us?”

He looked genuinely surprised.

“No.”

“Not even once?”

“Never.”

She studied him.

“What if I had never walked into that bakery?”

Marcus smiled.

“Then I suppose I'd still be drinking terrible hotel coffee.”

She laughed.

“But seriously.”

He became quiet.

“If you hadn't walked into that bakery, I might never have discovered what was happening inside my company.”

“And Olivia?”

“I might never have met your mother.”

“And me?”

Marcus looked at her.

“You changed my life.”

Maya smiled.

“You changed mine too.”

They sat together on the porch.

No cameras.

No business calls.

No reporters.

Just a father and daughter watching the sunset.

Marcus had once believed success meant building something no one could take away.

May you like

Now he understood.

Success was having someone beside you when the day ended.
