The federal investigation uncovered a hidden ownership structure.
The unknown partner had received enormous payments through offshore accounts.
When Marcus saw the final name, he couldn't speak.
Samuel Callaway.
His father.
Marcus had believed his father had been retired for years.
But records showed something else.
Samuel had secretly controlled the investment trust used by Crane.
Marcus called him.
No answer.
He drove to his father's estate.
The house was empty.
On the desk sat an envelope.
Marcus opened it.
Inside was a letter.
“I knew you would eventually find this.”
Marcus's hands trembled.
His father admitted creating the trust years earlier.
But he claimed he had not known about the fraud.
Someone had taken control of it without his permission.
At the bottom was one warning.
“Do not trust the person closest to me.”
Marcus stared at the sentence.
Closest to his father.
His mind immediately returned to one person.
