Chapter 7 - THE ROOM

The warehouse was empty.

Except for a small cardboard box sitting in the center.

Inside was Maya's pink hair ribbon.

Marcus stared at it.

Then he heard something.

A faint tapping.

Three knocks.

Pause.

Three knocks.

He followed the sound behind a stack of crates.

A storage room door had been locked from outside.

Marcus smashed the padlock with a metal bar.

“Maya!”

The girl was inside.

Her hands were tied, but she was unharmed.

Marcus dropped to his knees.

“Are you okay?”

Maya nodded rapidly.

“Mom?”

“She’s safe.”

He untied her.

Maya immediately wrapped her arms around his neck.

“I knew you'd come.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

He hadn't realized until that moment how terrified he had been.

“Let's get you home.”

Maya pulled back.

“I heard the man talking.”

“What did he say?”

“He said something about your company.”

Marcus listened carefully.

“He said you were supposed to fire someone.”

“Who?”

Maya shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Then she remembered.

“He said, ‘Voss will fix everything.’”

Marcus went completely still.

Daniel Voss.

The name he had tried to avoid believing.

Now a frightened six-year-old had repeated it.

The evidence was no longer circumstantial.

Someone inside his own company had targeted Olivia.

Marcus stood.

“Come on.”

Maya held his hand.

“Are you angry?”

“Yes.”

May you like

“At me?”

“Never.”
