Chapter 28 - A FAMILY DINNER

Years later, the four of them returned to Rosemary's bakery.
Olivia was healthy.
Maya was sixteen.
Marcus was grayer around the temples.
Lucas, now a toddler, sat between them laughing.
Clara brought out the famous vanilla cake.
Maya stared at it.
“The same one?”
“The same one.”
Marcus smiled.
“Except this time, we're paying full price.”
Maya reached into her purse.
“I have something better.”
She placed one dollar and thirty-four cents on the counter.
Marcus laughed.
“You've been carrying that all these years?”
“Of course.”
Olivia looked at the coins.
Then at her daughter.
Tears filled her eyes.
Clara gently closed her hand around the money.
“Keep it.”
Maya nodded.

She placed the coins back inside her purse.
Some things were never meant to be spent again.
