Chapter 4 - THE LETTER

Marcus opened the letter carefully.

Inside was a notice informing Olivia that her disability claim had been denied.

The reason stunned him.

“Insufficient medical documentation.”

Marcus looked at Olivia.

“This was processed through one of our contracted insurance administrators.”

“I know.”

“Did you appeal?”

“Twice.”

“Were you denied again?”

“Yes.”

Marcus's jaw tightened.

He had created systems designed to protect employees and their families.

Yet somehow a mother was lying sick in a motel while one of his companies denied her claim.

“I'll have this reviewed.”

Olivia immediately shook her head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I don't want favors.”

“This isn't a favor.”

“It is when you're the CEO.”

Marcus stared at her.

“What do you think I should do?”

“Nothing.”

Maya looked between them.

“But she's sick.”

Olivia closed her eyes.

Marcus understood then.

Her pride wasn't arrogance.

It was survival.

She had learned that accepting help could mean surrendering control.

Marcus stood.

“Fine.”

Olivia looked relieved.

“But I'm still going to investigate my own company.”

Her relief vanished.

“Please don't.”

“Why?”

She looked toward the window.

“Because whoever denied my claim is still watching me.”

Marcus went still.

“Who?”

May you like

Olivia whispered one name.

“Daniel Voss.”
