Chapter 21 - A NEW BEGINNING
A year passed.
Olivia was healthy again, and Maya had settled into school.
She still kept the small purse that had once contained her one dollar and thirty-four cents.
When Marcus asked why, she smiled.
“Because that money changed everything.”
Marcus understood.
Some memories were worth keeping.
One Saturday, Maya arrived at Callaway Freight with a school project.
“My teacher asked us what we want to be when we grow up.”
Marcus smiled.
“What did you write?”
“A lawyer.”
“Why?”
“So nobody can steal from families who don't know their rights.”
Marcus nodded proudly.
“You'll be a good one.”
Maya looked around the office.
“You know what's funny?”
“What?”
“This place used to feel scary.”
“And now?”
She grinned.
“Now it feels like Dad's giant office.”
Marcus laughed.
She had started calling him Dad almost by accident months earlier.
