Chapter 12 - OLIVIA'S CONDITION
Olivia's health worsened.
One morning, she collapsed while making breakfast for Maya.
Marcus caught her before her head hit the floor.
At the hospital, the doctor spoke quietly.
“She needs surgery.”
“How soon?” Marcus asked.
“Very soon.”
Olivia looked at him.
“I can't afford it.”
Marcus shook his head.
“This isn't about money.”
She looked away.
“I've heard that before.”
Marcus understood.
Promises meant nothing to her anymore.
So he didn't promise.
He simply took care of the paperwork.
He contacted the hospital.
He arranged the specialists.
He made sure every expense was covered without putting his name on anything.
When Olivia learned what he'd done, she cried.
“You didn't have to.”
“Yes,” Marcus said.
“I did.”
Maya sat beside her mother.
“Will you be okay?”
Olivia forced a smile.
“I will.”
Marcus looked at Maya.
“And I'll be here.”
Maya reached for his hand.
