Chapter 11 - THE MAN BEHIND THE NUMBERS

Marcus spent the next week tracing the money.
Every false claim led to another company. Every company led to another account.
Then he found a name he hadn't expected.
Elliot Crane.
Crane had once been Marcus's mentor.
He had introduced Marcus to investors, helped build Callaway Freight, and remained one of the most trusted advisers on the board.
Marcus stared at the transaction history.
Millions had flowed from Voss's accounts into a private investment fund controlled by Crane.
He called him immediately.
“I need to ask you something.”
Crane sounded calm.
“Of course.”
“Did you know about the employee claims?”
Silence.
Marcus's stomach tightened.
“Elliot?”
“You should stop digging.”
That answer was enough.
Marcus stood.
“Did you order Voss to deny Olivia Carter's claim?”
Crane sighed.
“Olivia was one of many.”
“She was a person.”
“She was an expense.”
Marcus ended the call.
For years, he had trusted Crane with everything.

Now he realized Crane had never seen employees as families.
Only numbers.
