Chapter 10 - THE WEDDING THAT NEVER HAPPENED

Dante pulled a gun.

Everything stopped.

Security rushed the hallway.

Vivien screamed.

I moved toward her.

Dante raised the weapon.

“Don't.”

I stopped.

Then Emma appeared at the far end of the hallway.

Three years old.

Yellow dress.

Gray rabbit.

Her eyes widened.

“Mr. Vincent?”

Dante looked toward her.

That distraction was enough.

Security slammed into him.

The gun struck the marble floor.

Within seconds, he was restrained.

Vivien collapsed against the wall.

I ran toward Emma.

She threw herself into my arms.

“I'm scared.”

I held her tightly.

“You're safe.”

She nodded against my chest.

Behind us, Dante shouted.

“You have no idea what your father did!”

I turned.

“I know enough.”

The police arrived.

Dante was taken away.

Vivien was arrested too.

Not because I hated her.

Because she had helped build the trap.

But before she left, she looked at me.

“I really did love you.”

I believed her.

That was the saddest part.

I had loved her too.

But love built on lies was still a prison.

The wedding was canceled.

The trust remained mine.

Not because I defeated them.

Because my father had protected me long before I knew I needed protection.

Weeks later, the house became quiet again.

Clara and Emma stayed.

The safe remained locked.

The painting remained on the wall.

But the little girl who had once warned me about a woman inside my study now ran freely through the halls.

One evening, Emma climbed onto the chair beside me.

“What are you doing?”

“Working.”

She frowned.

“Still?”

I smiled.

“No.”

I closed the laptop.

“I'm finished.”

“With everything?”

I looked toward the garden.

“With the past.”

Emma hugged her rabbit.

“Good.”

Then she reached for my hand.

“Come play.”

And for the first time, I did.

May you like

Because sometimes the greatest thing a child can save isn't your fortune.

It's your future.
