Chapter 5 - EMMA'S SECRET

That afternoon, Emma found me in the garden.

She sat beneath the old oak tree with her stuffed rabbit.

“Mr. Vincent?”

“Yes?”

“I know something.”

I sat beside her.

“What?”

She leaned close.

“Aunt Vivien talks to a man in the little garage.”

“When?”

“Nighttime.”

“What does he look like?”

She thought.

“Tall.”

“Hair?”

“Black.”

“Anything else?”

“He has a red mark here.”

She touched her neck.

A scar.

I knew exactly who that was.

Dante.

My younger brother.

He had been traveling for months.

Or so he claimed.

I called security.

“Check the garage cameras.”

The footage showed Vivien entering at 11:43 p.m.

Dante arrived twelve minutes later.

They spoke for nearly forty minutes.

Then Dante handed her a small metal case.

My stomach tightened.

I called him.

He answered cheerfully.

“Vince.”

“Where are you?”

“Boston.”

I looked at the footage.

“Really?”

Silence.

Then he laughed.

“You're suspicious of everyone these days.”

“No.”

I paused.

“Just the people lying to me.”

He hung up.

I watched the screen again.

Vivien opened the metal case.

Inside were several documents.

Then she gave Dante a key.

A key to my safe.

I felt something inside me go cold.

May you like

This had been planned long before I met Vivien.

And my brother was part of it.
