Chapter 17 - DANTE'S SECOND CONFESSION

Dante agreed to speak with me from prison.

I almost refused.

Then I remembered Adrian.

I went.

He sat behind the glass.

For once, he looked tired.

“Did you find Vermont?”

I froze.

“How did you know?”

“Father told me about it.”

“You knew about Adrian.”

His expression changed.

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

He stared at the table.

“Our father believed Adrian was dangerous.”

“That's what he told you?”

“No.”

Dante looked at me.

“Adrian discovered that Father had been stealing money from people connected to the family.”

My chest tightened.

“What?”

“He threatened to expose him.”

“So Father killed him?”

Dante shook his head.

“I didn't.”

“Then who?”

He closed his eyes.

“I don't know.”

“But you were there.”

“Yes.”

“What did you see?”

“Marcus.”

The name hit hard.

“Marcus Vale?”

Dante nodded.

“He was arguing with Adrian.”

“What happened?”

“Adrian left.”

Marcus followed.

Ten minutes later, we heard the crash.

I leaned closer to the glass.

“Why did you never tell me?”

“Because Father told me if I did, you'd be next.”

I stared at him.

For the first time, I saw genuine fear in my brother's eyes.

“What are you afraid of now?”

May you like

He whispered,

“Marcus is still alive.”
