Chapter 27 - THE LAST LETTER

Years after Dante's conviction, another letter arrived.
This one was from my father's estate archive.
It had been hidden inside a sealed legal box.
My father's handwriting filled the page.
Vincent,
If you found this, then the secrets have already come to light.
I am sorry.
Not for protecting you.
For teaching you that protection requires silence.
It doesn't.
The strongest families are not those without secrets.
They are those brave enough to face them.
I read the letter twice.
Then I folded it.
Clara asked what it said.
I told her.
She smiled.
“He finally understood.”
“Too late.”
“Maybe.”
I looked at the children playing outside.
“But not too late to matter.”
I placed the letter beside Sofia's photograph.
For years, I had wanted my father's approval.
Now I no longer needed it.
I had built the life he wanted but never knew how to build himself.
A life where truth wasn't dangerous.
A life where love wasn't leverage.
A life where children didn't need to become brave because adults had failed them.
I closed the drawer.
