Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT AFTER

The house felt different after Dante was taken away.

Not safer.

Quieter.

I stood in my study long after midnight, staring at the open safe.

The blue folder was still on the desk.

The birth certificate was beside it.

I should have felt relieved.

Instead, I kept hearing Dante's final words.

“You have no idea what your father did.”

I called my attorney.

“Tell me everything my father hid from me.”

He hesitated.

“That may take time.”

“I have time.”

“No, Vincent. You have a problem.”

“What?”

“The trust is not the only inheritance your father left.”

He sent me a document.

A property deed.

An old property in Vermont.

My father's name.

Then another name.

Isabella Rossi.

I stared at it.

Why would my father leave a property to Vivien's mother?

The answer came the next morning.

A caretaker called.

He had been instructed to contact me if anything happened to my father.

“Mr. Moretti,” the old man said, “there is something inside the house your father wanted you to see.”

I asked him what it was.

May you like

He whispered,

“A room he never let anyone enter.”
