Chapter 18 - THE LAST ENEMY

Marcus disappeared before we could find him.

His bank accounts were empty.

His house had been abandoned.

His phone had been destroyed.

But one location remained.

The Vermont house.

I returned with security.

This time, the hidden room was open.

Inside was a desk.

A computer.

And dozens of folders.

Marcus had been monitoring my family for years.

He had records on Dante.

Vivien.

Clara.

Even Emma.

My stomach turned.

Then I found one final folder.

Sofia.

I opened it.

My daughter's medical information.

Her hospital records.

Everything.

I stared at the pages.

Marcus had been tracking my family long before Dante ever entered the picture.

The investigator looked at me.

“Why would he keep this?”

I didn't answer.

Then the computer screen lit up.

A message appeared.

“You should have stopped looking.”

A second message followed.

“Now you know what happened to Adrian.”

Then a final line.

“You still don't know what happened to Sofia.”

My heart stopped.

I stared at the screen.

The room seemed to disappear.

Seven years of grief.

Seven years of believing leukemia had taken my daughter.

Now the possibility that someone had interfered with her treatment returned.

I closed my eyes.

May you like

Not again.

Not another child.
