Chapter 6 - THE FALSE CONFESSION

The next morning, Clara came to me crying.

“Mr. Moretti, I did it.”

I stared at her.

“Did what?”

She handed me a folder.

“The money.”

She whispered.

“I took it.”

I didn't believe her.

“You expect me to believe you stole hundreds of thousands of dollars and somehow left evidence behind?”

She looked terrified.

“Vivien said she would take Emma.”

My blood ran cold.

“What did she threaten?”

“Social services.”

I stood.

“She told me if I didn't confess, she would say I stole from you.”

I looked at the folder.

It contained bank transfers.

Clara's name.

Her signature.

Everything seemed perfect.

Too perfect.

I called my attorney.

He checked the documents.

Within an hour, he discovered the truth.

The signatures were digitally copied.

The bank account belonged to a shell company.

Clara had been framed.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice said,

“Stop digging.”

“Who is this?”

“You've already lost more than you know.”

I looked toward Clara.

The voice continued.

“Call off the wedding.”

“Why?”

“Because if you marry Vivien, you won't own anything afterward.”

The line went dead.

I stared at the phone.

Then I smiled.

Because whoever had called had just confirmed something.

May you like

The wedding wasn't their ending.

It was the deadline.
