Chapter 7 - Elena’s Last Letter
The breakthrough came from a box nobody had opened in four years.
Elena’s belongings had been stored in the locked attic room after her death.
Adrian had avoided the room.
Vivian visited it often.
Grace never entered unless Adrian asked her to.
Marcus found a reference to a handwritten letter in an old inventory log.
The item had been listed as “Personal letter to Adrian.”
Adrian did not remember receiving it.
They opened the storage cabinet.
The letter was gone.
Vivian had access.
So had Adrian.
Only two people possessed keys.
Adrian sat on the attic floor surrounded by Elena’s photographs.
Grace stood near the doorway.
“You don’t have to do this today.”
“Yes, I do.”
He opened another box.
Inside were hospital bracelets, greeting cards, and a blue blanket Elena had bought before Leo was born.
At the bottom sat an old tablet.
Its battery was dead.
Marcus took it downstairs.
Two hours later he restored enough power to access the files.
Elena had saved drafts of emails and notes.
Most were ordinary.
Grocery lists.
Leo’s feeding schedule.
A birthday message for Adrian.
Then Grace saw a folder labeled “V.”
Adrian opened it.
The first note was dated six weeks before Elena died.
Vivian is frightening me.
Adrian stopped reading.
Grace touched his arm.
He continued.
Elena wrote that Vivian had become increasingly controlling after Leo’s birth.
She criticized Elena’s parenting.
She questioned Adrian’s decisions.
She repeatedly asked about the family trust.
One note described an argument.
Vivian had told Elena that Adrian’s wealth had changed her.
Elena responded that Vivian seemed far more interested in Adrian’s money than she was.
Another entry was worse.
Vivian told me that if anything ever happened to me, she would make sure Leo was raised properly.
I asked what she meant.
She smiled and said I worry too much.
Adrian’s hands began shaking.
Grace sat beside him.
There was one final note.
Dated three days before Elena entered the hospital.
I changed the guardianship documents.
Vivian cannot be the person who controls Leo’s future.
I need to tell Adrian after my procedure.
If she learns about the change first, she will explode.
Adrian stared at the screen.
“She changed it.”
Grace nodded.
“Apparently.”
“But Nathan’s documents still listed Vivian.”
“Then maybe the change never reached him.”
Marcus leaned forward.
“Or someone stopped it.”
The room went silent.
Adrian remembered Vivian handling Elena’s documents after her death.
She had organized the funeral.
She had collected hospital records.
She had delivered files to attorneys.
She had been everywhere.
Grace looked at the tablet.
“What happened to Elena’s letter?”
Adrian’s eyes darkened.
“And what guardianship change did she make?”
Marcus began searching cloud backups.
At 7:43 p.m., he found a scanned legal form attached to an unsent email.
Elena had removed Vivian as secondary guardian.
In her place, she had named her father, Thomas Vale.
Thomas had died two years later.
The change had been signed.
Witnessed.
Notarized.
But never filed with the trust administrator.
Nathan reviewed the scan remotely.
“If we locate the original, this changes everything.”
Adrian looked toward the attic door.
“Vivian knew Elena removed her.”
Grace whispered, “Which means this started before I ever came here.”
