Chapter 3 - The Woman They Trusted

Vivian Vale had been part of Adrian’s family long before Grace.
That was why her betrayal cut so deeply.
Vivian’s younger sister, Elena, had been Adrian’s first wife.
Elena died eight months after Leo was born.
A sudden cardiac complication had taken a healthy thirty-two-year-old woman from a hospital room that had been prepared for a routine procedure.
After Elena died, Vivian stayed close.
At first Adrian had been grateful.
She knew how Elena organized Leo’s bottles.
She knew which lullabies Elena used.
She knew every family tradition Adrian was too shattered to remember.
Vivian became indispensable.
Then Grace entered his life.
Grace had been a childhood-development specialist hired to help Leo after months of sleep problems and separation anxiety.
She never tried to replace Elena.
That was the first thing Adrian loved about her.
Grace spoke Elena’s name freely.
She kept photographs of Elena in Leo’s room.
When Leo became old enough to understand, Grace told him his mother had loved him before he had even opened his eyes.
Vivian hated her for it anyway.
At first the hostility was subtle.
A misplaced bottle.
A sarcastic comment.
A photograph of Elena placed prominently on Grace’s chair before family dinner.
Then came accusations.
Grace had forgotten Leo’s medication.
Grace had left a window open.
Grace had spoken harshly to a staff member.
Grace had thrown away one of Elena’s keepsakes.
Each time, Vivian produced just enough evidence to make the accusation believable.
Each time, Grace defended herself.
Each time, Adrian tried to keep the peace.
He now understood what keeping the peace had actually meant.
Grace had been forced to absorb the damage.
Vivian had been allowed to continue causing it.
Adrian entered the library where Vivian was waiting.
Marcus stood near the door.
Vivian looked toward Adrian.
“How is Leo?”
“He’ll be fine.”
Her shoulders dropped dramatically.
“Thank God.”
Adrian placed the tablet on the desk.
Vivian saw the paused image.
Her hand was touching Leo’s back.
She stopped breathing.
Adrian did not raise his voice.
“Explain.”
Vivian looked at Marcus.
Then at Adrian.
“The angle is misleading.”
“Explain.”
“I was reaching for him.”
“You pushed him.”
“No.”
“The video shows it.”
“Videos can look different from what actually happened.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“You requested that camera be disabled.”
Vivian’s face changed.
“Because the gardeners complained it was interfering with their work.”
Marcus spoke.
“No gardener made that complaint.”
Vivian glanced at him.
Marcus continued.
“I checked.”
Adrian placed both hands on the desk.
“You believed the camera was off.”
Vivian said nothing.
“You brought Leo to the pool.”
Silence.
“You rolled his toy toward the edge.”
Silence.
“You pushed a twenty-month-old child into deep water.”
Vivian’s lips trembled.
Then she whispered, “I knew Grace was there.”
Adrian stared at her.
Vivian’s voice grew stronger.
“I knew she would save him.”
Grace had entered the doorway behind him.
Vivian saw her.
“You wanted her to jump in?”
Grace asked.
Vivian shook her head.
“I wanted Adrian to see that you were careless.”
Grace’s expression hardened.
“You threw a baby into a swimming pool to make me look careless?”
“I didn’t throw him.”
Adrian slammed his palm against the desk.
Everyone jumped.
“You pushed my son into water.”
Vivian finally cried.
Real tears this time.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain it.”
Vivian looked from Adrian to Grace.
Her face twisted with bitterness.
“Everything changed when she came here.”
Grace said nothing.
Vivian continued.
“You stopped talking about Elena.”
“That is not true.”
“You married another woman.”
“Three years after Elena died.”
“You gave Grace control of Leo’s life.”
“I gave my wife a place in my family.”
Vivian laughed bitterly.
“Your wife.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“Yes.”
Vivian’s voice dropped.
“She was never supposed to become his mother.”
Grace went still.
And in that moment Adrian finally saw what had been in front of him for years.
May you like
Vivian had never been protecting Elena’s memory.
She had been protecting her own place inside Adrian’s home.
