Chapter 16 - The Locked Nursery

Adrian’s car reached the estate in seventeen minutes.

The front gate stood open.

One guard was conscious but injured beside the security office.

Vivian had not overpowered him.

She had used an old emergency code.

A code Adrian did not know she still possessed.

Grace ran inside.

“Leo!”

Adrian caught her arm.

“Stay behind me.”

She pulled free.

“That is my son upstairs.”

He did not correct her.

They reached the nursery.

The door was locked.

Rosa stood in the hallway crying.

“She came in through the service stairs.”

“Where’s Leo?”

Rosa pointed at the door.

“With her.”

Grace slammed her palm against it.

“Vivian!”

Silence.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Vivian, open the door.”

No response.

Marcus arrived with two security officers.

They began working on the lock.

Then Vivian spoke from inside.

“You always choose someone else.”

Adrian froze.

“Open the door.”

“You chose Elena.”

“Vivian.”

“Then you chose Grace.”

Grace stood beside him.

Adrian kept his voice steady.

“Leo has nothing to do with this.”

Vivian laughed softly.

“Leo is the only person who has anything to do with this.”

Grace’s stomach tightened.

“What do you want?”

Vivian answered immediately.

“For you to leave.”

Grace stared at the door.

“Then open it and I’ll leave.”

Adrian looked at her.

Grace ignored him.

“I’ll walk out right now.”

Vivian was silent.

Grace continued.

“You don’t want me here.”

“No.”

“So let Leo come out.”

“You think I’m stupid?”

“No.”

Grace’s voice remained calm.

“I think you love him.”

Adrian looked at her sharply.

Vivian did not respond.

Grace stepped closer.

“You took care of him when he was a baby.”

Silence.

“You held him when Elena couldn’t.”

Vivian’s voice cracked.

“I was there.”

“I know.”

“Everyone forgets that.”

“I don’t.”

Grace leaned against the door.

“You mattered to him.”

Inside, they heard Leo whimper.

Grace closed her eyes.

“But loving someone doesn’t mean you own them.”

Vivian suddenly shouted.

“Stop talking.”

Leo began crying harder.

Grace lowered her voice.

“You are scaring him.”

“I said stop.”

“You know what song Elena used when he cried?”

Silence.

Grace began singing softly.

Not loudly.

Just the first lines of Leo’s bedtime song.

Leo’s crying weakened.

From behind the door, Vivian began crying.

Real crying.

Grace continued.

A minute later they heard the lock click.

Marcus immediately moved forward.

Adrian held up a hand.

The door opened two inches.

Vivian stood inside holding Leo.

Her face was wet with tears.

Grace stayed still.

“Give him to me.”

Vivian looked at Leo.

“He was supposed to love me.”

Grace’s voice trembled.

“He does.”

Vivian stared at her.

“But children grow.”

Grace continued.

“They love more people.”

“That doesn’t mean they stop loving the ones who came first.”

Vivian looked down.

For one moment it appeared she might surrender.

Then police sirens sounded outside.

Vivian panicked.

She stepped backward.

Marcus moved.

Everything happened quickly.

Adrian pushed the door open.

Vivian screamed.

Grace reached for Leo.

An officer entered from the balcony.

Vivian lost her grip.

Grace caught Leo before he hit the floor.

She dropped to her knees and wrapped both arms around him.

Adrian covered them with his body.

Police restrained Vivian.

She screamed his name.

“Adrian!”

He did not look at her.

She screamed again.

“I did everything for you.”

Adrian finally turned.

Vivian was being handcuffed.

He stared at her for a long moment.

Then said the words she had spent years refusing to understand.

“I never asked you to.”

Vivian stopped fighting.

Officers led her away.

Grace held Leo against her chest.

His small fingers gripped her collar.

“Mommy.”

Everyone froze.

Grace looked down.

Leo had never said that word to her before.

Tears filled her eyes.

Adrian looked away because he could not stop his own.

May you like

Vivian heard it from the stairs.

And that single word broke her more completely than the handcuffs ever could.
