Chapter 6 - The Missing Medicine
Marcus began with the allergy medication.
Four months earlier, Grace had prepared Leo’s emergency bag for a weekend trip.
When they reached the country house, the medication was missing.
Vivian had immediately suggested Grace had forgotten it.
Adrian remembered Grace insisting that she had packed it.
He also remembered telling her that everyone made mistakes.
At the time, he had thought he was comforting her.
Now the memory embarrassed him.
Marcus recovered archived garage footage.
Vivian had entered the car twenty minutes before their departure.
She remained inside for forty-two seconds.
Later that night, the medication bottle appeared in her handbag.
Vivian claimed she had mistakenly picked it up from the kitchen counter.
The timestamp made that explanation impossible.
Next came Elena’s bracelet.
Vivian had accused Grace of secretly removing it from a memorial box.
The bracelet was found two days later inside Grace’s dresser.
Marcus reviewed hallway recordings.
One camera showed Vivian entering Grace’s bedroom while Grace was at the grocery store.
She carried nothing when she entered.
She stayed inside seven minutes.
When she left, her left pocket sagged.
Adrian watched the footage twice.
His face became colder each time.
Then the nursery window.
Vivian had claimed Grace left it open during a winter night.
Leo developed a fever the following morning.
The exterior camera showed Vivian entering the nursery balcony at 1:12 a.m.
Grace had been asleep in Adrian’s room.
Then the roses.
A work order to remove Elena’s favorite white rose bushes had been sent from Grace’s email account.
Marcus called the landscaping company.
The request had originated from an IP address assigned to Vivian’s guest suite.
One incident could be explained.
Two might be coincidence.
Four became intention.
By afternoon, Marcus placed a file on Adrian’s desk.
“There’s a fifth.”
Adrian looked up.
“The stair gate.”
Six months ago the latch failed while Leo was crawling near the stairs.
Grace had caught him before he fell.
Vivian told everyone Grace must have forgotten to secure it.
Marcus placed two photographs on the table.
“The screws were loosened.”
Adrian stared at them.
“With a screwdriver?”
“Yes.”
“Do we know who did it?”
“No video inside that hallway.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Marcus continued.
“But I found the screwdriver.”
“Where?”
“In the maintenance cabinet.”
“That means nothing.”
Marcus slid another photograph across the desk.
A small white fingerprint-powder mark highlighted part of the handle.
Adrian looked at him.
“Vivian?”
“We need a formal examination before saying that.”
Adrian pushed back from the desk.
He suddenly felt sick.
Every time Vivian created danger, Grace had been nearby.
Grace had not caused the danger.
She had prevented it from becoming worse.
Vivian had then used Grace’s presence against her.
Adrian went upstairs.
Grace was reading Leo a picture book.
He stood in the doorway for several seconds.
Grace noticed him.
“What did you find?”
Adrian told her.
Grace’s eyes slowly filled with tears.
Not because she was shocked.
Because she had spent nearly a year questioning herself.
“I thought I was losing my mind.”
Adrian’s throat tightened.
Grace looked down.
“I checked that gate three times.”
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
She stood carefully so she would not disturb Leo.
“I started writing down everything I did.”
Adrian frowned.
“What?”
“I kept notes.”
She opened a drawer beside the nursery chair.
Inside was a small gray notebook.
“Bottle packed.”
“Window locked.”
“Gate checked.”
“Medication replaced.”
Adrian turned the pages.
Dates filled nearly every line.
Grace had been documenting ordinary household tasks because Vivian had made her distrust her own memory.
Adrian could barely look at her.
Grace closed the notebook.
“That is what your neutrality did to me.”
He had no response.
