Chapter 14 - The House Across the Lake

Police arrived at Vivian’s lake house before noon.

Vivian was gone.

Her car remained in the garage.

Her phone had been left on the kitchen counter.

A rear security camera showed her leaving on foot two hours earlier.

Detective Brooks issued an alert.

Adrian doubled security around Leo.

Grace moved back into the estate temporarily.

Not for Adrian.

For Leo.

They made that distinction clear.

Leo seemed confused by the tension around him.

He was too young to understand betrayal.

He only knew Grace was home again.

That night he fell asleep with one hand wrapped around her finger.

Adrian watched from the doorway.

Grace noticed him.

“You can come in.”

He sat on the other side of the crib.

Neither spoke for a while.

Finally Adrian said, “He pointed at the camera.”

Grace smiled faintly.

“He likes blinking lights.”

“That blinking light changed everything.”

“No.”

Grace looked at Leo.

“The camera changed what you knew.”

She met Adrian’s eyes.

“What happened was already true.”

Adrian absorbed that.

They had spent days talking about evidence.

But evidence did not create truth.

It only made denial harder.

At midnight Marcus knocked quietly.

“We found something at Vivian’s house.”

Adrian followed him downstairs.

Detective Brooks had discovered a locked cabinet containing copies of Leo’s financial records.

Trust documents.

Adrian’s insurance information.

Grace’s adoption petition.

A printed copy of Adrian’s travel schedule.

And photographs.

Dozens of them.

Grace entering the pediatrician’s office.

Grace shopping with Leo.

Grace meeting Nathan.

Grace standing outside the courthouse.

Someone had been following her.

Adrian stared at the images.

“Vivian took these?”

“Some appear to be from a private investigator.”

“Who?”

“We’re checking.”

Marcus placed another folder down.

Inside was a draft petition requesting emergency guardianship.

The document had been created two months before the pool incident.

The allegations were already written.

Grace was emotionally unstable.

Grace was negligent.

Grace had dangerous resentment toward Leo because he was not biologically hers.

The pool incident had been planned to become the final supporting evidence.

Grace read the pages silently.

Her hands began trembling.

Adrian took the papers away.

“Enough.”

“No.”

Grace took them back.

“I want to read it.”

“You don’t have to.”

“I do.”

She finished every page.

Then she looked at Adrian.

“She knew what you would say.”

“What?”

Grace pointed to one paragraph.

The petitioner expects the father, Adrian Cole, will confirm that he has observed increasing instability in his wife.

Adrian’s face drained.

Vivian had planned around him.

She had been confident Adrian would doubt Grace.

And he had.

For those few terrible seconds by the pool, he had followed Vivian’s script perfectly.

Grace closed the file.

“That’s why she screamed before you reached us.”

Adrian nodded.

“She needed my first reaction.”

“If there had been no camera, she would have used your own words against me.”

“Yes.”

Grace looked toward the dark windows.

Adrian expected anger.

Instead she looked sad.

“She knew our marriage better than we did.”

The truth of it hurt.

Vivian had recognized every crack between them.

Then she had widened each one.

Marcus’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He listened.

Then looked at Adrian.

“Police found Vivian’s second vehicle.”

“Where?”

Marcus swallowed.

“Across the lake.”

“Near what?”

Marcus’s eyes shifted toward Grace.

“Near the old Vale family cabin.”

Margaret had once told them Elena kept personal journals there.

Journals Vivian had never been able to find.

Adrian stood.

“She isn’t running.”

May you like

Grace understood instantly.

“She’s looking for something.”
