Chapter 1 - The Camera in the Garden

Then Leo pointed at the security camera, and Vivian’s fake panic turned into real fear.

Baby Leo was crying beside the pool.

When Adrian ran outside, Grace was soaked, shaking, and holding his son inside a white towel.

Vivian stood several feet away with both hands pressed dramatically over her mouth.

“She pushed him in!”

For one terrible second, Adrian believed her.

He saw the ripples spreading across the pool.

He saw Leo’s tiny wet clothes.

He saw Grace on her knees, breathing so hard she could barely speak.

Panic became rage before reason had a chance to catch up.

“Give him to me.”

Grace stared at him.

“Adrian, listen to me.”

“Give me my son.”

The words hit Grace harder than shouting would have.

Not our son.

My son.

Grace slowly handed Leo over.

“He slipped into the pool because Vivian put him near the edge.”

Vivian gasped.

“That is disgusting.”

Grace turned toward her.

“You know what you did.”

“I watched you push him.”

“You weren’t even beside me when he fell.”

“Stop lying.”

Adrian looked between them.

His heart was pounding so violently that he could hear it.

Leo clung to his shirt and cried.

Grace wiped water from her face.

“I jumped in after him.”

Vivian shook her head.

“She jumped in because she realized I saw her.”

Grace looked at Adrian.

“Please.”

There were years inside that one word.

Years of being patient.

Years of raising Leo as though she had given birth to him herself.

Years of waking at two in the morning when he had a fever.

Years of singing the same ridiculous song because it was the only thing that made him sleep.

And Adrian had doubted all of it in less than ten seconds.

Then Leo moved.

His crying weakened into small broken sounds.

He lifted one trembling hand.

At first Adrian thought his son was reaching for Grace.

Instead, Leo pointed past them.

Toward the corner of the garden.

A security camera rested beneath the stone overhang.

Its red indicator light blinked steadily.

Vivian stopped crying.

Completely.

Grace saw it.

Adrian saw it.

Even Rosa, the housekeeper who had appeared in the doorway, saw the exact second Vivian’s performance disappeared.

Her face went white.

Adrian turned slowly toward the camera.

Then he looked at Vivian.

“You said you watched Grace push him.”

Vivian swallowed.

“I did.”

“Then the camera watched too.”

“It might not have recorded.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“What?”

Vivian recovered quickly.

“I mean, those cameras fail all the time.”

Adrian stared at her.

“How would you know?”

Vivian opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Grace stood.

Water ran from her dress onto the stone patio.

Adrian immediately took out his phone.

“Marcus.”

His head of security answered on the second ring.

“Yes, sir?”

“Lock the security archive.”

A pause followed.

“All of it?”

“Everything from today.”

Adrian looked directly at Vivian.

“And nobody touches the system until I’m standing in front of the screen.”

Vivian stepped forward.

“Adrian, Leo needs a doctor.”

“He’s getting one.”

“I should come.”

“No.”

Her expression changed.

“What?”

“You stay here.”

“Adrian.”

“That wasn’t a request.”

For the first time since Grace had known her, Vivian looked genuinely frightened.

Adrian turned toward Grace.

She expected an apology.

None came.

Not yet.

Instead, he said quietly, “Come with me.”

Grace looked at Leo in his arms.

Then at the man who had almost condemned her without hearing her.

“I’m coming for Leo.”

Adrian flinched.

Grace walked past him.

Behind them, Vivian remained beside the pool.

May you like

Alone.

And for the first time, the woman who had spent months controlling everyone else finally understood that the next few minutes might destroy everything she had built.
