Chapter 17 - The Truth About Elena
Vivian was charged first with child endangerment, unlawful entry, and interference with custody.
The investigation into Elena’s death continued.
The recorded confession changed everything.
So did the journals.
Prosecutors could not prove Vivian intended to kill Elena.
But they did not need to prove murder to establish criminal responsibility for drugging her.
A forensic specialist reviewed Elena’s medical history.
The sedative Vivian admitted giving her could have worsened the complication that followed.
Whether Elena would have died without it could never be known with certainty.
That uncertainty tortured Adrian.
Grace refused to let it consume him.
“Elena deserves truth.”
She told him.
“Not a story we invent because we need certainty.”
Adrian nodded.
He visited Elena’s grave alone.
For years he had brought flowers and talked about Leo.
This time he brought the letter.
He sat beside the stone.
“I should have listened better.”
Wind moved through the trees.
“I should have seen what was happening.”
He paused.
“Grace says I’m turning your fear into my guilt.”
A sad smile crossed his face.
“She’s probably right.”
He told Elena about Leo.
His first real sentence.
His obsession with strawberries.
The way he danced whenever the washing machine played its completion tone.
Then Adrian spoke about Grace.
“She keeps your pictures in his room.”
He swallowed.
“She tells him you loved him.”
He looked at Elena’s name.
“She never tried to replace you.”
His voice broke.
“I think that’s why she became his mother.”
For the first time since Elena died, Adrian did not leave the cemetery feeling as though he had abandoned her.
He felt as though he had finally told her the truth.
Weeks later, Vivian accepted a plea agreement on the drugging charge after her attorney reviewed the accumulated evidence.
She admitted placing a sedative into Elena’s tea.
Her stated intention had been to make Elena too impaired to undergo the procedure.
She claimed she wanted Elena embarrassed and dependent.
The medical complication had not been planned.
Adrian did not forgive her.
But he accepted the distinction.
Vivian had not necessarily entered the hospital intending Elena to die.
She had still made a choice that contributed to the chain of events that ended her sister’s life.
The pool incident was different.
That had been deliberate.
Vivian admitted she engineered it to make Grace appear dangerous before the adoption hearing.
She insisted she believed Grace would save Leo.
Grace refused to accept that excuse.
“You don’t get credit because someone else prevented your cruelty from becoming a tragedy.”
Those words were included in Grace’s victim-impact statement.
Margaret attended every hearing.
She never asked Adrian to forgive her silence.
She only asked whether she could someday rebuild a relationship with Leo.
Adrian did not answer immediately.
Grace did.
“Someday is possible.”
Margaret cried.
Grace continued.
“But trust will be earned slowly.”
Margaret nodded.
“That is fair.”
