Chapter 18 - The Adoption

Grace’s adoption hearing took place six weeks after the pool incident.

There were no reporters inside.

No dramatic crowd.

No expensive strategy.

Only Adrian.

Grace.

Leo.

Nathan.

Margaret.

Rosa.

And Judge Evelyn Hart.

The judge reviewed the case carefully.

Then she looked at Grace.

“Mrs. Cole, you understand that adoption creates a permanent legal relationship.”

“Yes, Your Honor.”

“It does not depend on the continuation of your marriage.”

“I understand.”

Adrian looked at Grace.

That sentence mattered.

Grace’s place as Leo’s mother would no longer depend on Adrian.

It would belong to her.

The judge continued.

“You also understand the child has a deceased biological mother whose legal and family history remains part of his identity.”

Grace smiled.

“Yes.”

“What do you intend to tell Leo about her?”

Grace looked at the little boy sitting on Adrian’s lap.

“The truth.”

The judge waited.

Grace continued.

“That Elena loved him.”

“That she chose his name.”

“That he has her eyes.”

“That she wanted him more than anything.”

Margaret covered her mouth.

Grace’s eyes filled.

“And I’ll tell him I was lucky enough to love him after she couldn’t be here.”

The judge nodded.

Adrian lowered his head.

He could not hide his tears.

Judge Hart signed the order.

“Congratulations.”

Leo had no idea what happened.

He clapped because everyone else did.

Then he reached for Grace.

“Mommy.”

Grace lifted him.

This time the word did not shock the room.

It belonged there.

Outside the courthouse, Adrian waited until everyone left.

Grace stood beside the car with Leo asleep against her shoulder.

“There’s something I need to tell you.”

Grace looked at him.

Adrian took a breath.

“I canceled the trust provision that gives me sole control.”

She frowned.

“What?”

“I created an independent board.”

“Why?”

“Because Leo’s money should never depend on one person again.”

Grace studied him.

“That includes me?”

“Yes.”

She smiled faintly.

“Good.”

Adrian blinked.

“You’re not offended?”

“No.”

“Vivian spent years fighting for control of that trust.”

“Exactly.”

Grace adjusted Leo in her arms.

“Money shouldn’t decide who gets to call themselves family.”

Adrian looked at her.

Then he said what he had been afraid to ask for weeks.

“Will you come home?”

Grace’s smile disappeared.

“Adrian.”

“I don’t mean for Leo.”

She waited.

“I mean for us.”

Grace looked toward the courthouse.

“I’m not ready.”

Adrian nodded.

Pain crossed his face, but he accepted it.

Grace continued.

“I love you.”

He looked up.

“That didn’t disappear.”

“Then what did?”

“Trust.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Grace stepped closer.

“And trust doesn’t come back because the villain was exposed.”

He looked at her.

“It comes back because the person who hurt you becomes different.”

Adrian nodded.

“I’m trying.”

“I know.”

That was not forgiveness.

But it was the first time Grace had acknowledged his effort.

Adrian opened the car door for her.

As Grace climbed inside, Leo stirred.

“Da.”

Adrian smiled.

“I’m right here.”

Grace looked at him.

For the first time in weeks, there was warmth in her eyes.

Perhaps the door between them was not open.

But it was no longer locked.
